A. DOCUMENTARIES & INDEPENDENT FILMS

*THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS – DVD

One of the most influential political films in history and especially timely in today’s world. Vividly recreates a key year in the tumultuous Algerian struggle for independence from the occupying French in the 1950s. Not a documentary but a faithful recreation of events filmed just a few years after the battle with the actual participants and a single professional actor. Three-disc set includes many bonus features, including a 2002 documentary of senior French military officers recalling the use of torture and execution to combat the rebellion, and a case study by Richard A. Clarke, former national counterterrorism coordinator. Highly recommended!.

* BUSH’S BRAIN: HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? - DVD

“The blueprint for what’s happening now is all up there on the screen.”—Tina Brown, Washington Post. Karl Rove - hard to find a more compelling documentary subject.

*CONTROL ROOM - DVD

This rare documentary film is both timely and timeless in exploring the ancient and complex relationship between the Western and Arab worlds, and in revealing how satellite television has changed the way wars are reported.

*ARLINGTON WEST – DVD

*OUTFOXED: RUPERT MURDOCH’S WAR ON JOURNALISM - DVD

Documentary exposes what it’s like to work for Fox News and examines how media empires have been running a “race to the bottom” in TV news.

*THE FUTURE OF FOOD - LILY FILMS

Documentary examining some of the anomalies of 9/11 in depth. Sequel to “The Great Deception.”

*ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE: ARMENIANS LOOK BACK AT THE STALIN TERROR

The human impact of the Great Terror that took place in the USSR between the 1930’s and Stalin’s death in 1953 is explored by ordinary people as they look back at the Stalin years.

*UNCOVERED: THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT THE IRAQ WAR

CIA, Pentagon and foreign service experts speak out, detailing the lies, misstatements and exaggerations that serve as reasons to fight a “preemptive” war that wasn’t necessary in Iraq.

*FREEDOM TO MARRY – DVD

An upbeat, humorous and moving documentary highlighting the turn of events on 2/12/04, when Mayor Gavin Newsom began allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry at San Francisco City Hall.

*THE KENNEDY ASSASSINATIONS

1. Lyndon Johnson’s role in the murder of John Kennedy and others (aired on the History Channel in Nov. 2003)

2. Rebuttal by three history professors
